While Mattel has apologized and \u201cpulled\u201d the publication and has promised a better attitude going forward, the important concept that girls can be what they dream to be and should reach for the stars is what really matters. Women in tech have been successful for years. I\u2019m not just talking about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/marissa-mayer-20902689\" target=\"_blank\">Marissa Mayer<\/a>\u2019s of this world. There are thousand\u2019s (and hopefully tens of thousands) of us who have built successful tech careers, many of them, like <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalmediaphile.com\/index.php\/barb-bowmans-resume\/\" target=\"_blank\">myself<\/a>, going back 20 or 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been lots of activity on Barbie\u2019s Facebook page where posts are being deleted by Barbie\u2019s social media staff (see Posts to Page) and some still are up at <a title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BarbieNAD\/posts\/362944293876701\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BarbieNAD\/posts\/362944293876701\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BarbieNAD\/posts\/362944293876701<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of my peers has started a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/beth.melton\/posts\/10152590887870208?pnref=story\" target=\"_blank\">#realgirlgeek campaign<\/a> to highlight the fact that women and girls CAN be anything they want to be, including computer programmers and IT professionals.<\/p>\n<p>The White House also has recently stepped up a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2014\/11\/12\/white-house-report-women-and-girls-color-addressing-challenges-and-expan\" target=\"_blank\">campaign<\/a> to highlight and help and equalize the pay gap in ALL professions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"white house equality\" src=\"https:\/\/digitalmediaphile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/whitehouseequality.png\" alt=\"white house equality\" width=\"550\" height=\"477\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s encourage our girls to pursue and excel in technical careers.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, for what it\u2019s worth, here\u2019s my remix of the horrendous Barbie, I can be a Computer Engineer.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: currentColor;\" src=\"https:\/\/sway.com\/s\/AfeqrwPfXsdbK-s7\/embed\" width=\"650\" height=\"570\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Mattel has angered a large segment of the Girl Geek world with a book with a decidedly sexist slant that portrays Barbie as needing help from boys to successfully complete a coding project.
